We have known since Zennon was very young (he was hospitalized before he was a year old) that he had allergies, asthma, something that we knew we would be fighting off yearly. It usually is when his body is fighting off a cold to begin with he just gets that much worse and struggles to breathe.
So, we noticed he was starting to come down with a cold (I truly felt like it was all the time - since he started school this year) so, before bed he asked if he could have a breathing treatment. We agreed it would probably be a good idea so, we did. He woke us up a few hours later asking for another one so, we did. That sure didn't last long - he came down a few minutes later asking for another and I could hear him wheezing for air and even though it had not been anywhere close to when he was aloud another treatment. so, I sat with him and was just trying to calm him when I noticed his lips were starting to turn blue - HE NEEDED AIR AND HE NEEDED IT NOW! So, Eric called 911 and we started another breathing treatment. (They don't like breathing treatments less than 4 hours apart since it speeds up their heart so much - but we had no choice he needed it) He was still doing his breathing treatment when the ambulance and firetruck showed up. Boy was I happy to see them. Even though it only took them a few minutes to get to us - it felt like forever.
They checked him out and talked to us but, since he was doing breathing treatment ( which was exactly what they would of done) they waited took his vitals (heart rate was high - which we knew why) told us that he was stable enough that if we felt ok we could take him to the ER ourselves or if we wanted they could but, either way he had to go and it had to be now. We needed to get him dressed and go. So, that is what we did.
Eric and Zennon pulled out of the driveway almost immediately following the ambulance. I unfortunately had to stay home since we had two other little ones who slept thru the entire madness.
Man, I wish it was smooth sailing after that but, of course not. They were just a few minutes out of the driveway and Zennon started to have another attack. Poor Eric, he was alone in the car with Zennon trying to drive. Needless to say he got to the Children's hospital in about 7 minutes when it would usually take us about 20.
As soon as they walked in they took Zennon right back and told Eric they would be admitting him. Poor dude spent the next 3 days in the hospital. The 1st two were the worse he was actually in the Pediatric ICU (and you could tell he was not himself - he didn't want to move, he couldn't eat, he couldn't drink - he was doing breathing treatments almost back to back, had him on steroids - it was just a hot mess. It helped they got his meds figured out and on the 3rd day we got to go to a normal room for just one last night. They had construction going on out his window so, he kept busy watching that. He also was able to put his own clothes on - boy, did that make him feel better and they even brought a Wii into the room to help keep our crazy (hyper from all the meds) kid to relax.
This was Saturday after almost a day in the hospital. He was finally starting to feel a bit better.
Kinda got a smile - he was hungry and thirsty at this point and
was not aloud to eat or drink yet.
IPad kept him busy for awhile too
This was truly the best. We could tell her was just exhausted but his body was so hyped up from all the steroids and breathing treatments. I asked him if he wanted me to rub his back and he said "Well yea someone has to do something." hahahah only Zennon.
Yeah, finally in normal room with a pretty cool view - for a 5 year old boy!
mommy and daddy played a game of baseball and I had to take a picture to remind daddy who rocks at Wii ( especially baseball) this mommy!
Of course he demanded a rematch - and I lost.
This kid was so jacked up, I could not stop laughing.
We went by these on our way into Children's Hospital from the ER but, he felt so awful he paid no attention so, was pretty excited to see them on his way out! Puppy in hand ( The firefighters gave that to him when they came to our house to help him from being scared and Monster Truck he got when Mrs. Spoonmore, Jacob and Brendan came to visit!
Crashed a few into the car ride home. Its been a long weekend for this kid :(
We are on a lot of preventive medicine now including emergency meds so, lets hope we don't end up in the hospital again. Or ever get to that point again.
We also had him allergy tested in the weeks following this stay and he was highly allergic to cats and dogs :( Of course he is - our little animal lover.
